Things Are Rather Bushy Again

Bush has not been the player he was
in college in the NFL.
New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush was in the news once again last week for all the wrong reasons. The current National Football League labor issues have caused concern throughout the league and for many others, but especially for a lot of players. Apparently not for the twenty-six-year old running back. Bush has used his Twitter account irresponsibly recently posting some very controversial tweets since the NFL Draft and they have made headlines.

The Saints drafted Alabama's superstar running back and '09 Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram with the 28th overall pick in this years draft in an effort to improve a running game that ranked 28th in the league a year ago. Bush, who is currently in the final year of his current contract tweeted, "It's been fun New Orleans," following the pick seemingly telling Saints fans he is on his way out.

The tweet raised some eyebrows and thoughts that his selfish antics are never going to disappear. Many of members of the Saints organization believed it was a maturity issue and Bush would eventually embrace the team first concept, so far that looks like it might never happen.

Bush followed this tweets with an even more jawing dropping statement that had many questioning Bush's character. "Everybody complaining about the lockout! Shoot I'm making the most of it! Vacation, rest, relaxing, appearances here and there! I'm good! Bush wrote. "Right now we would be slaving in 100 degree heat, practicing twice a day, while putting our bodies at risk for nothing."

Bush tried to a cover his tracks in the aftermath by posting a second tweet after receiving such negative feedback. "FYI last tweet was a joke! Relax people damn it's called a sense of humor! Cry me a river why don't you.." What it really a joke though?

Bush is owned $11.8 million in '11 and then can test the water as a free agent. Unlike many of the NFL player suffering from the lockout, Bush has made plenty of money during his first five seasons in the NFL after being drafted in first-round of the '06 draft. The recent tweets by Bush show he has not grown out of his immaturity that dates back to his time as a Trojan.

It is no secret that Bush was taking payoffs from agents while attending the University of Southern California. The consequences were grave, as Bush was stripped of his '05 Heisman Trophy, leaving the award vacated and the university receiving a two-year ban from any college bowl games. His selfish antics also had the Trojans removed as the 2004 BCS National Champions. Bush has built a reputation as being a selfish teammate and wanting the limelight all to himself.

Ingram will bring a toughness
to the Saints Bush was
unable to bring.
Bush has simply not been the player New Orleans thought he would be when they drafted him with the second overall pick. In sixty games for the Saints, Bush has accumulated 2,090 of his yards on the ground, finding the end zone only seventeen times. The California native has however made his success as an all-purpose back for Sean Payton's dynamic offense. The six-footer has complied 4,984 total yards in the NFL scoring thirty-three times, those numbers are great just not at almost $12 million a year.

The addition of Ingram will bring a balance to New Orleans's running game, if Bush and Ingram can coexist. Ingram brings the ability to break away from defenders and run between the tackles as where Bush brings his dynamic play making ability and speed to the table.

Led by MVP quarterback Drew Brees, nearly 40 Saints players met up earlier this month to begin offseason workouts in hopes of a season in '11. Bush was not one of the players to attend the non-mandatory workouts.

You can be sure that Bush will attract a lot of suitors next offseason with the versatility he brings to an NFL squad, but as long as he brings along that me first mentality it will be sure to end quickly wherever he ends up.  Even though Bush has said he wants to retire a Saint it is almost certain he will not be back in New Orleans.
